A Voice for Water
ARMOUR was formed in 2015 further to a group of concerned citizens taking action to address a major sewage spill into the Jukskei River in Johannesburg.
Determined to find out what had happened, who was responsible for the incident and how could it be resolved, a core team of volunteers was mandated to form a working group with representatives from Johannesburg Water, the City of Joburg and the Department of Water & Sanitation.
With positive results 'The Voice for Water' was subsequently 'heard' and an ongoing relationship was established as platform between civil society and those responsible for managing OUR water.
Over time a 'network of networks' has been developed which welcomes those who align with a shared vision for clean & safe waterways. Constructively challenging and co-operating with parties accountable for incidents the following approach underpins the team's success:

'Catchment to Catchment'
Action taking place
'it's not about picking up other peoples litter, fixing leaks, stopping sewage or illegal activities,
it's about awareness, knowledge transfer, subsequent behavioural change & the impact of being part of a sustainable solution'

Forever Remembered & Honorary Life Member
Tribute for our founding member, the late Willem Hazewindus
(24 May 1939 - 8 January 2021)
A gentleman, a professional to his fingertips and a friend who is deeply missed. Willem Hazewindus, formerly a director of Tongaat-Hulett and chair of the Northern Region of Wessa, passed away on 8 January 2021. Willem was one of four people who formed ARMOUR in November 2015. He immediately committed himself, energy and soul, to the mighty endeavor to get a new river ethos in place, one where public and private sectors collaborate in the work to return our rivers to healthy, living streams. His advice, his work behind the scenes, and upfront when needed (as with the beginning of a campaign to force manufacturers of absorbent hygiene products to take some responsibility for the disposal of their products), was highly valued by the whole ARMOUR Committee. His care for the Committee, and where ARMOUR should be going, was always a stimulus. That was where his professionalism shone through. And the warmth and sparkle of his friendship - that was always there. We all miss him, but his spirit lives on in the work he started with ARMOUR. And it will continue!
